BABY FACTORIES: A Sustaining Dimension to Human Trafficking in Nigeria

Image
BABY HARVESTING: A New Dimension to Human Trafficking in Nigeria By Unongu I commence this essay with a quote from Vanguard newspapers: "Anyone who hears about Nigeria’s baby factories would think it is government’s policy to sustain our high population. The tag creates impressions of facilities turning out babies round the clock. What elsewhere do factories do…" - Vanguard Editorial, March 31, 2014. _ _ Baby factories is an emerging crime in developing countries and is prevalent in some African countries especially Nigeria. The sordid illegal business revolves around pregnant women and girls who are willing to give up their new born babies for financial gain without having any contact with the buyer or ever seeing the child again. The practice where some Nigerian medical doctors engage in illegal sales of babies, taking advantage of the helplessness of pregnant women girls and the desperation of childless couples, is now recurring decimal in Nigerian society. This ugly pract...

REAL HISTORY OF JEHOVAH WITNESSES

Image
History of the Jehovah's Witnesses Fifty years ago the Jehovah's Witnesses numbered fewer than 100,000. Now there are several million of them around the world. They don’t have churches; they have "Kingdom Halls" instead. Their congregations are uniformly small, usually numbering less than two hundred. Most Witnesses used to be Catholics or Protestants. Let’s look a little at their history, because that will help us understand their unique doctrines.  The sect now known as the Jehovah’s Witnesses was started by Charles Taze Russell, who was born in 1852 and worked in Pittsburgh as a haberdasher. He was raised a Congregationalist, but at the age of seventeen he tried to convert an atheist to Christianity and ended up being converted instead—not to outright atheism, but to agnosticism. Some years later he went to an Adventist meeting, was told that Jesus would be back at any time, and got interested in the Bible.  The leading light of Adventism had been Wi...

FULL TEXT OF INDEPENDENCE BROADCAST by President Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR

Full Text Of 2014 Independence Day Broadcast By President Goodluck Jonathan Fellow Nigerians: 1. Today marks the 54th anniversary of our country’s independence as a sovereign nation. This is also the tenth month of our journey into a new century, having marked the centenary of our nation in January this year. 2. The first one hundred years were marked by triumphs and tribulations, benefits and burdens, opportunities and challenges. We made some far reaching advances in building a strong, united and prosperous nation. We also overcame the forces of disunity that culminated in a debilitating civil war. We have also renewed our faith in one another, and in our country. We have proven that we are truly a resilient nation. 3. In my address to the nation last year, I did emphasize that we were in a sober moment in our country. We are still in that mood in spite of the many accomplishments of our administration. Our somberness has to do with the crises of nationhood occasioned by th...

Don’t Be Fooled, We Are Getting Closer To A Nigerian Revolution – Bemdoo Hulugh

Image
It was Governor Rotimi Ameachi who famously said Nigerians are too timid for a revolution to take place. During the 2012 fuel subsidy protest, Col. Abubakar Dangiwa Umar (Rtd) in his own wisdom said we should forget about the Arab spring in Nigeria. These words have been echoed almost everywhere. Off course, Nigeria is unique but thinking a revolution will never take place in Nigeria is pushing our uniqueness too far. Chinua Achebe said in his last book that “the story Nigeria had of herself was that something like a military coup would never happen, Nigeria was too stable for that”. Today is not an era of military coup, it is the era of revolutions and we are still thinking it will “never happen”. I believe when military coups were happening left and right in Africa all we did then was say it won’t happen and today we are saying same thing about revolutions. Let those in authority not be fooled, we are getting closer and closer to a Nigerian revolution. What is ...
