SENATOR RAJI RAZAKI DISPLAYS RARE SELFLESSNESS

Selflessness is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as " having or showing great concern for other people and little or no concern for yourself". Selfless is the opposite of selfish. If you're selfless, you think less about your self, and more about others - you are generous and kind. Being selfless is similar to being altruistic - another word for giving to others without looking for personal gain. Among the political elites in Africa and, indeed, Nigeria such attributes are rare to come by! However, if the events that took place a few weeks ago is anything to go by, then Nigerians would be proud to know that they have in the 'kitty-bag' a new discovery of a long existing selfless personality... the kind-heart mother figure of Senator Fatimat Raji Razaki.
The joy of Mesrs Naanpen Ayuba and Tersoo Aluga knew no bounds as they narrated their ordeal while they were caught up at the Benin-Ore death trap of an express road. They were on their way to Jos from Benin City to meet up with an official appointment. Driving in Tersoo's 1998 model Honda Accord, with Naanpen behind the wheel, they both set out on a journey they are used to, having traveled together this way for six years. But on this particular ride, they encountered what they did not bargain for. The Honda Accord saloon tie-rod pulled while they were negotiating a bend and if not for Almighty God who ensured the calmness of Naanpen who was behind the wheel, I would be telling a different story.
Tie rods are attached on both ends of the steering rack and as the pinion rolls over the slotted rack, they help push and pull the front tires as the steering wheel is turned. It happens to be a common set back of Honda vehicles. After flagging down an uncountable number of passing vehicles without success, the young men resorted to taking their fate in their own hands and walking the rest of the way to the nearest available habitation to seek for help. Just as the were picking their personal effects out of the car, a Good Nigerian came passing by and stopped. A young man in the car came out and asked what was the problem and after listening to their ordeal, went back and relayed the information to an occupant seated at the "owners-corner" of the chauffeur driven vehicle. Before you could say "Jack Robinson", she ordered that they be towed to Abuja where they were left off at a Mechanic's shop who was instructed to fix the car at no charge to the young men. At the point of leaving them with the mechanic, the person at the back of the car wound down to bid farewell to the young men only to reveal her identity to them. It was the Distinguished Senator Fatimat Raji Razaki!!!
While in Abuja, they called me, the writer of this story, and passed the night in my house before proceeding to Jos the next day. The story evokes the feelings of how politicians should always behave. I envy the people of Ekiti for having such a selfless Senator. God Bless Senator Fatimat Raji Razaki... God Bless Ektit
