Wind of Revolution In North Africa & Middle East
Everyday for about two months now, i wake up to the snaring sound of radio and television updates on the ongoing demonstrations in Arabia. By the word Arabia, i mean North Africa and the Middle East. The demonstrations that sparked violence and deaths, and ultimately led to the ouster of President Ben Ali of Tunisia, had a spill over effect on Egypt and fortunately or unfortunately, saw to the resignation of their long serving President, Hosni Mubarak. If you thought the Sahel-like wind of revolt would have ended there, then think again. The media is currently awash with tiring news of protests and demonstrations across the Arab world, especially in Bahrain, Yemen, and most recently, Libya.
What could have triggered the protests that is spreading like wild fire in the Arabian peninsula? If the sit-tight syndrome of some world leaders is anything to attribute the demonstrations to, then why is the revolution not initiated in some countries of Black Africa (Zimbabwe, Sudan, Chad, Cameroon, et al) where their so-called leaders have practically REFUSED to relinquish the reigns of power? Or is it that the people of Arabian descent are more determined and resolute than the black Africans? Is the price of revolution too much a price to pay for the people of, say, Zimbabwe? Why do some Leaders hold on to power and then refuse to let go? Please blog with me as we try to unearth the root causes of the leadership cleansing that is currently infecting Africa and the Middle East.
