Image
At least 30 ethnic Fulani herdsman were killed by Boko Haram militants in northern Nigerian last weekend when they raided the village of Alau in Borno state. “One of the herdsmen escaped and confirmed to us that he is the only survivor,” Amadu Kusuri, the northeast coordinator of the Fulani Miyetti Allah Association, said Thursday. The Islamist insurgents also kidnapped women and children and stole livestock in the attack on April 24 , Babangida Ali, the brother of one of those killed in Alau, said by phone. While Nigeria says it’s making progress in the battle against Boko Haram, which has waged a violent seven-year campaign to impose its version of Islamic law on Africa’s most populous nation, the group continues to carry out massacres in remote areas and suicide bombings in towns and cities. MILITARY HIGH COMMAND GEARS UP FOR A JOINT OPERATION AGAINST TERRORIST HERDSMEN

Image
Strong indications emerged on Thursday that the military high command in the country might come up with a joint operation involving the various security agencies against the menace of Fulani herdsmen in the country. The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, told our correspondent on Thursday that the expected operation would not be restricted to a single service of the Armed Forces. He said that the operation would be similar to the ones formed to battle the insurgency in the North-East, the militancy in the Niger Delta and other parts of the country. Abubakar was reacting to the question of what the military would do in view of the recent directive by President Muhammadu Buhari to the military and the police to stop the recurrent killing of hapless villagers by armed Fulani militia. Buhari‘s directive followed the public outrage that greeted the murder of 50 people at Ukpabi Nimbo Community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State by suspected Fu

SENATOR RAJI RAZAKI DISPLAYS RARE SELFLESSNESS

Image
Selflessness is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as " having or showing great concern for other people and little or no concern for yourself". Selfless is the opposite of selfish. If you're selfless , you think less about your self, and more about others - you are generous and kind. Being selfless is similar to being altruistic - another word for giving to others without looking for personal gain. Among the political elites in Africa and, indeed, Nigeria such attributes are rare to come by! However, if the events that took place a few weeks ago is anything to go by, then Nigerians would be proud to know that they have in the 'kitty-bag' a new discovery of a long existing selfless personality... the kind-heart mother figure of Senator Fatimat Raji Razaki.  The joy of Mesrs Naanpen Ayuba and Tersoo Aluga knew no bounds as they narrated their ordeal while they were caught up at the Benin-Ore death trap of an express road. They were on their way t

FARMER SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR KILLING FULANI INVADER

Image
By Tobi Soniyi The Supreme Court has affirmed the death sentence handed out to a farmer and father of five, James Afolabi, by the Kogi State High Court and the Court of Appeal. In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday, a five-man panel of the apex court held that there was no basis to disturb the concurrent finding of the trial and lower courts in their previous judgments. Afolabi, from Kogi State, was convicted and sentenced to death by the Kogi State High Court, Lokoja in 2012 having been found guilty for the murder of a Fulani man, Abubakar Mohammed. The court relied on Afolabi’s confessional statement to the police, where he claimed to have shot Mohammed on the chest for straying into his (Afolabi’s) yam and cassava farm on February 27, 2009. The Court of Appeal, Abuja on March 22, 2012 dismissed his appeal and upheld the decision of the trial court, a decision he appealed to the Supreme Court. On Friday, Justice John Inyang Okoro, in the lead judgment in the appeal marked:

HOW WE RIGGED EKITI ELECTIONS FOR FAYOSE - Dr. Aluko

Image
Fresh facts have emerged on how the June 21, 2014 governorship election in Ekiti State was allegedly manipulated in favour of Governor Ayo Fayose. The embattled former State Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Tope Aluko, has revealed how the rigging was perfected inside a hotel barely a week before the poll. He said sensitive materials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), such as ballot papers and result sheets, were delivered to PDP chieftains to allow for the manipulation of the poll long before the first ballot was cast. Speaking on a special interview programme on Wednesday on ADABA 88. 9 FM monitored by our reporter, Aluko claimed that the electoral materials were delivered through Akure Airport and taken to a hotel owned by Fayose’s Chief of Staff Dipo Anisulowo in Are-Ekiti, where the alleged manipulation was carried out. He said ballot papers were thumb-printed and result sheets filled by PDP members, which gave the party “undue adv
